CD Song Notes
1. Together
A song about the power of music for bringing people together especially in these divisive times. I originally wrote it on Ukelele for a Songwriting Competition. However I think it sounds better on guitar. I wrote a special verse for Fleetwood Folk Club’s 50th Anniversary celebrations. I’ve also written verses for a few of the local music clubs I sing at! The verse for Pickering Acoustic Music contains the following classic lines;
“There’s a place in Pickering called The Sun Inn
A place where we’ll gather now & then
A place we can have some fun in
Where we can share our music with our friends.”
2. A King Of The Road
A song about my Dad. He was a long distance lorry driver. I often used to go with him when he was doing local jobs. Up until the age of 10 that’s all I wanted to be.
3. Big Fish, Little Fish
A song I wrote for a Songwriting competition. It’s about the sculpture of an iron fish on the slipway at Robin Hood’s Bay. It was put there by a sea captain in the Nineteenth Century to raise money for the village lifeboat. It’s still in use as a donation box for the RNLI. Apparently if you put some money in the mouth of the fish, the fish flicks it’s tail. But it’s just too quick for the human eye...
4. Black Damp
I am fascinated by the contrast of the beauty of Rosedale & it’s heavy industrial past. A song about ironstone mining in this lovely place in the Nineteenth Century. The stale air in the mines could be fatal & was known as the Black Damp.
5. The Right Words To Say
A simple love song.
6. You Take My Blues Away
A bluesy love song.
7. This Old Table
A song written for my best friends Cris & Ed Hooper who live in Herefordshire. When I lived there they looked after me! Their lovely old kitchen table is the place to be & I’ve spent many happy (& sad) times around it with good friends & even better food & wine. People seem to like the song since it makes them think of their own kitchen table & the people who sit around it.
8. Love Endures
Written for a couple who have been through the very worst of times over the last few years. When everything seems to be going wrong in your life, its essential to remember that there will always be love. It conquers all.
9. Village Hall Boogie Nights
I grew up in the village of Settrington & the highlight of any week was the Saturday night village hall disco. All the boys standing round the edge & the girls dancing round their handbags. I could never understand when one girl went to the loo, they ALL went! The DJ would always choose the same final song to get everyone on the dancefloor. Good memories.
10. If I Could Only Dance
Again a song I originally wrote on the Ukelele after stealing a chord sequence from the Internet. I must admit I’m very proud of this song & it may be one of the best I’ve ever written?
Thank you so much for listening to the CD. I really hope you enjoy the songs.

LYRICS
Together
David Swann
Chorus
It’s better when we sing our songs together
It’s better when we’re closer you & me
These memories will stay with me forever
It’s better when we sing in harmony
It’s better when we sing our songs together
It’s better when we’re closer you & me
These memories will stay with me forever
It’s better when we sing in harmony
It’s better when we sing in harmony
We seem to be living through some dark times
Where people try to drive us far apart
The people who try to preach division
They cannot drive the goodness from our hearts
We mustn’t let those people come between us
We know we must stay closer you and me
We’re stronger when we sing our songs together
We’re stronger when we sing in harmony
Chorus
There is a place I think I know the way to
A place where we can gather now & then
Somewhere where the musics always flowing
Where we can share our music with our friends
I know that I’ll always want to be there
Somewhere where we’re closer you & me
Somewhere we can sing our songs together
Somewhere we can sing in harmony
